ABOUT

DR SAKHUXOLO MAPHIKANA

A calling to care for women through every life stage

From adolescence to the menopausal years, Dr Sakhuxolo Maphikana has committed his career to walking alongside women during some of the most transformative moments of their lives. With more than a decade of medical experience – including more than eight years of hands‑on practice at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, one of the busiest teaching hospitals in South Africa – he has developed deep expertise in obstetrics and gynaecology. Women under his care describe a safe, warm environment where they are encouraged to speak openly about sensitive health concerns without judgement, and this is no accident. Dr Maphikana considers his profession a calling: the opportunity to protect, guide and uplift women, through excellent female health care.

Qualifications and training

Dr Maphikana holds an MBChB degree and completed a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the University of the Witwatersrand. He has also achieved the Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa (FCOG (SA)), reflecting specialist‑level competency in his field. His time at Chris Hani Baragwanath exposed him to high‑risk pregnancies and complex surgical cases, shaping his patient‑centred style of practice.

Comprehensive services at multiple locations

Dr Maphikana offers consultations at Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital, Apex SurgiCentre Day Hospital and Dr SK Matseke Memorial Hospital in Soweto. His practice offers a full spectrum of women’s‑health services, from routine check‑ups and antenatal / post‑partum care to the management of menopausal symptoms, menstrual disorders and endocrine conditions. His scope includes complex surgical and diagnostic procedures. He also provides Pap smears and gynaecological cancer work‑ups, infertility care, family‑planning and contraception counselling, management of severe menstrual pain and minimally invasive surgery. Adolescent gynaecological care and antenatal care are also offered to ensure young women and expectant mothers receive appropriate support.

Approach to care

While Dr Maphikana is highly qualified, patients often highlight his empathy and clear communication. He strives to empower women to take charge of their health by fostering trust and creating a safe environment for them to make informed decisions. Consultations focus on honest discussions about options rather than quick fixes; where appropriate, he collaborates with other specialists – including fertility experts, radiologists and oncology teams – to provide coordinated care. Patients can expect straightforward information about expected outcomes, risks and alternatives so that they can participate actively in their healthcare journey.
