Pregnancy & Obstetric Care

ANTENATAL CARE

Personalised pregnancy care from early pregnancy through to delivery

Personalised check-ups and scans – Regular consultations, ultrasound examinations and blood tests monitor your baby’s development and your health throughout pregnancy. Guidance is provided on nutrition, supplements, exercise, common pregnancy symptoms and important milestones to support a healthy pregnancy.

Comprehensive pregnancy monitoring – Ongoing antenatal visits track your baby’s growth, monitor your blood pressure and general wellbeing, and identify possible concerns as early as possible. Care includes routine examinations, ultrasound assessments and discussions about birth planning and preparation for delivery.

Specialised monitoring for complex pregnancies – Some pregnancies require closer observation because of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, multiple pregnancies, previous complications, recurrent pregnancy loss or existing maternal health conditions. Dr Maphikana provides monitoring and management to support the wellbeing of mother and baby.

Cervical cerclage (cervical stitch) – For women with a weakened or shortened cervix, Dr Maphikana may recommend a supportive stitch to help keep the cervix closed during pregnancy. The procedure is generally performed between 12 and 14 weeks, depending on individual circumstances, and may reduce the risk of premature birth.

Pregnancy complication management – Assessment and management are provided for common and complex pregnancy concerns, including gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related hypertension, pre-eclampsia, recurrent miscarriage, preterm labour concerns, reduced fetal growth and other complications requiring additional monitoring or treatment.

DELIVERY CARE

Personalised care and support throughout labour and birth

Natural vaginal birth – Where clinically appropriate, Dr Maphikana supports women who wish to have a vaginal delivery. Care includes preparation for labour, guidance on what to expect during each stage of birth and ongoing monitoring to support the safety and wellbeing of both mother and baby.

Labour monitoring and support – During labour, careful assessment helps monitor the baby’s heartbeat, the mother’s progress, contractions, pain levels and overall wellbeing. This allows any concerns to be identified early and helps guide decisions throughout the delivery process.

Planned Caesarean delivery – When a Caesarean section is recommended in advance, Dr Maphikana provides clear counselling and preparation before the procedure. Patients are guided through what to expect during surgery, pain management, hospital care and the recovery period after delivery.

Emergency Caesarean delivery – If complications arise during labour and a Caesarean section becomes the safest option, Dr Maphikana provides prompt surgical care to protect the health of both mother and baby. Support and follow-up are provided after the procedure to assist with recovery.

VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) – For suitable candidates, a vaginal birth after a previous Caesarean may be possible. Dr Maphikana carefully assesses each pregnancy and discusses the potential benefits, risks and likelihood of success to help women make informed decisions about their delivery options.

POSTNATAL CARE

Support after delivery for mother and baby

Physical recovery and postnatal check-ups – Regular postnatal consultations help monitor your recovery after childbirth, including bleeding, pain, blood pressure, energy levels and general wellbeing. These visits also provide an opportunity to discuss any new symptoms or concerns that may arise during the weeks following delivery.

Caesarean, wound and pelvic recovery care – Dr Maphikana assesses healing after a Caesarean section, vaginal delivery, tearing, stitches or an episiotomy. Guidance may include wound care, pelvic-floor recovery, pain management, safe movement and signs of infection that may require further medical attention.

Breastfeeding and feeding support – Support is available for breastfeeding difficulties, breast or nipple pain, engorgement, blocked milk ducts, mastitis and concerns about milk supply. Feeding progress can also be discussed to help ensure that both mother and baby are adjusting well.

Emotional wellbeing and adjustment after birth – The postnatal period can involve significant emotional and lifestyle changes. Consultations provide a safe space to discuss anxiety, exhaustion, mood changes, the “baby blues” and possible symptoms of postnatal depression, with further support or referral when needed.

Contraception, ongoing health and return to normal activities – Postnatal care includes family-planning advice and follow-up for conditions such as gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related hypertension, pre-eclampsia, anaemia or thyroid concerns. Guidance is also provided on medication, supplements, exercise, sexual activity, driving, returning to work and gradually resuming everyday routines.

PREGNANCY LOSS SUPPORT

Compassionate care, guidance and follow-up during a difficult time

Sensitive assessment and diagnosis – Dr Maphikana provides careful and compassionate assessment for women experiencing bleeding, pain or other symptoms that may be associated with miscarriage or pregnancy loss. Ultrasound imaging, blood tests and clinical examinations may be used to confirm the diagnosis and determine the most appropriate care.

Personalised treatment options – Depending on the stage of pregnancy, symptoms and individual medical needs, treatment may include careful monitoring, medication or a surgical procedure. Each option is explained clearly so that patients can make informed decisions about their care.

Physical recovery and follow-up care – Follow-up consultations help monitor recovery, manage bleeding or discomfort and identify possible complications such as infection or retained pregnancy tissue. Guidance is also provided on rest, medication and when to seek urgent medical attention.

Emotional support and wellbeing – Pregnancy loss can be deeply distressing, and every woman’s experience is different. Consultations provide a respectful and supportive space to discuss emotional wellbeing, grief, anxiety and any concerns, with referral for additional counselling or support when needed.

Planning for future pregnancies – When appropriate, Dr Maphikana can discuss possible causes, recommended investigations and the safest time to consider another pregnancy. Women with recurrent pregnancy loss may require further testing and specialised monitoring to support future pregnancy planning.
